Climbing spikes, such as the Universal 12 cm from Climbing Technology, are still relevant in alpine terrain. Made of hardened steel, this nail is perfect for hard rocks such as granite. Although it does not adapt to rock irregularities like soft steel nails, it is easier to remove and reuse.
Its off-center head at 45 generates a torsional effect when it receives load, which fixes it firmly in the fissure. This allows it to be used in both vertical and horizontal cracks.
Important: The 10 cm and 12 cm versions are classified as 'Type P' progression nails according to the UIAA, intended for rock progression. Only the 15cm version has the 'Type S' rating to secure.
